Biography
Ryan is a BAFTA Cymru Award-winning Director of Photography known for his agility, versatility, and collaborative approach to filmmaking. His career began across a wide range of film projects, quickly earning him a reputation as a fast, creative, and adaptable cinematographer with a strong visual sensibility.
His recent credits include the feature Frank and Percy, directed by Sean Mathias, starring Ian McKellen and Roger Allam, the supporting cast is pretty stacked, with Sir Stephen Fry, Dame Joanna Lumley, former Doctor Who leads Ncuti Gatwa and Peter Davison, Baby Reindeer’s Jessica Gunning and Gavin & Stacey’s Rob Brydon also appearing. Further stars include The Windsors’ Hugh Skinner, Vicious’ Sir Derek Jacobi, Keeping Faith’s Dame Siân Phillips, Rosemary & Thyme’s Felicity Kendal, A Discovery of Witches’ Dame Sheila Hancock, A Man for All Seasons’ Gary Wilmot, EastEnders’ Nitin Ganatra, Adolescence’s Amari Bacchus and dancer Wayne Sleep.
Last year he also shot About a Bell, a beautiful contemporary fable packed with humour and feel-good drama from director Simon Callow, it stars Omid Djalili (The Infidel, The Mummy), Roger Allam (Endeavour, The Choral), and BAFTA-nominees Eleanor Worthington-Cox (Britannia, The Enfield Haunting), Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who, 28 Days Later), and Nigel Havers (The Gentlemen, Chariots of Fire).
In 2024, Ryan served as lead series DOP on the TV show Death Valley for BBC One, starring Timothy Spall and Gwyneth Keyworth.
Ryan received the BAFTA Cymru Award for Best Cinematography for The Poet Who Loved the War: Ivor Gurney, and has been nominated a further three times for American Interior (2014), The Fight (2019), and Grav (2022). His other notable credits include Dolly Wells’ Good Posture starring Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear) and Emily Mortimer, Jessica Hynes’ The Fight, Alice Lowe’s Prevenge and Timestalker.
Born in Blackburn, live in Cardiff, Wales; welsh resident for 29 years.
