Biography
Ryan is a BAFTA Cymru Award-winning Director of Photography known for his agility, versatility, and collaborative approach to filmmaking. His career began across a wide range of film projects, quickly earning him a reputation as a fast, creative, and adaptable cinematographer with a strong visual sensibility.
His recent credits include the feature Frank and Percy, directed by Sean Mathias, starring Ian McKellen and Roger Allam, and featuring an ensemble cast including Rob Brydon, Felicity Kendal, Peter Davison, Gary Wilmot, Sheila Hancock, Nitin Ganatra, Peter Straker, Amari Bacchus, Hugh Skinner, Wayne Sleep, Stephen Fry, Jessica Gunning, Joanna Lumley, Derek Jacobi, Ncuti Gatwa, and Siân Phillips. Ryan also shot About a Bell, directed by Simon Callow and starring Eleanor Worthington-Cox, Omid Djalili, and Christopher Eccleston, as well as the feature Let’s Love, featuring Martin Freeman, Josh Hutcherson, Malin Akerman, and Jess Weixler.
For television, Ryan served as lead series DOP on Death Valley for BBC One, starring Timothy Spall and directed by Simon Hynd. Before that, he lensed Timestalker, directed by and starring Alice Lowe alongside Nick Frost, Tanya Reynolds, Jacob Anderson, and Aneurin Barnard.
Ryan received the BAFTA Cymru Award for Best Cinematography for The Poet Who Loved the War: Ivor Gurney, and has been nominated a further three times for American Interior (2014), The Fight (2019), and Grav (2022). His other notable credits include Dolly Wells’ Good Posture starring Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear) and Emily Mortimer, Jessica Hynes’ The Fight, Alice Lowe’s Prevenge, Rhiana Yazzie’s A Winter Love, and seven feature films with director Jamie Adams.
